Baylor Softball One Step Closer

Baylor had an easy time of it on Wednesday as they won two run-ruled games and advanced to the Division II-Class AA state final where they will be looking for their eighth straight state title on Thursday afternoon.

Baylor had a 13-run fourth inning while defeating GPS by a 15-0 final in five innings while whipping Tipton-Rosemark by a similar 10-0 final in a game that also lasted five innings.

The Chattanooga Christian Lady Chargers began their day with a 5-3 loss to Tipton-Rosemark before rallying to eliminate GPS by an 11-5 in the loser's bracket final.

CCS now faces Tipton-Rosemark again on Thursday for the right to play Baylor for the state title.

Baylor coach Kelli Smith knows just how tough it's been for her team this spring, but she's so proud of the way they have come on when it counts the most.

"I'm really proud of these young ladies as they've earned the right to play for another state title," Smith said after the second win of the day.

"We'll celebrate today's win for a little while, but we have to be ready to take care of business tomorrow.  Riley Oleksik has been a clutch player for us all season and she had a great day today, but I thought that both of our pitchers threw well and we also got some clutch hits," she continued.

Baylor had a 2-0 lead over GPS after two innings but totally blew it open with a 13-run fourth.

Then in the win over Tipton Rosemark, it was scoreless for the first two frames before Oleksik poked  a bloop two-out, two-run single just into the grass past second.

Then in the fifth, the Lady Red Raiders had their second big inning of the day when 13 players batted and eight of them scored.  Once again, it was the scrappy Oleksik who spearheaded the rally as she smacked a three-run homer to deep center.  Addi Yates, who also had a great game with three hits and three runs scored, had a three-run double.

A run-scoring double by Holly Merritt followed and gave Baylor its 10th run.

"It's been an awesome day for us as we got two really big wins.  That was the first time we played Tipton-Rosemark and it's always sweet when we can whip GPS, but I'm on cloud nine right now.  We know how to win in May and we look forward to another championship opportunity tomorrow," Oleksik said.

Avery Shamblin was the winning pitcher for Baylor in that second game as she allowed just two hits and a pair of walks while striking out seven.

Kaylee Snyder was the winner in the first game after allowing two hits and three walks while striking out four.

Morgan Sharpe, Katie Raper, Yates and Oleksik all had two hits in that game with Sharpe and Yates both scoring three times.  Raper had four RBIs that included a two-run homer while Sharpe and Oleksik both had three RBIs
