Baylor 3rd at Best of Preps

Although their overall youth still shows up at inopportune times on the basketball court, the Baylor Lady Red Raiders have also shown signs of being fast learners.

On Saturday, in the third-place game of the annual Times Free Press Best of Preps tournament at Chattanooga State, they proved they can bounce back quickly from disappointment as well.

Just one day after struggling to score down the stretch of what became a 12-point loss to Notre Dame in the opening round of the consolation bracket, the Lady Red Raiders led throughout their matchup with Boyd Buchanan in taking a 57-48 win.

"It's been good for us to play a lot of games during the holidays because we're so young that we just need to keep playing and get as much experience as possible," said Baylor coach John Gibson, whose team has no seniors and one junior, with the rest of the roster made up of freshmen and sophomores.

"We couldn't get a basket when we needed one against Notre Dame, but today we had several kids step up to contribute down the stretch. We're just now starting to get to where we need to be in our understanding of the game. Even though it's been shaky at times, it helps just to go through the struggle to gain that experience we will need."

Baylor (4-9) had three players score in double digits, led by sophomore Rory Oleksik's 14 points, including four first-half 3-pointers. Paige Thompson added 13, Amiya Leach contributed 10 and Caroline Daniels scored nine.

The Lady Red Raiders had six players account for 10 3-pointers and made 11 of 14 free throws as a team.

"We're starting to spread the offensive output out more, which is what we need," said Gibson, whose team opened the tournament with a 60-50 win over Red Bank. "We're finding a way to get others involved, and you can see this group is growing.

"Sometimes, because of our youth, when we don't score on a few possessions, we start pressing and thinking we need to do more than we actually do. That's just a lack of confidence, which comes from our lack of experience. Games like this one should help with that."

Boyd Buchanan's Jada Sanders scored a game-high 23 points, including four 3s, but the Lady Buccaneers fell to 5-8.
