John played at Lincoln Junior College and the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. 

Coaching Career
Gibson served as an assistant coach at UTC from 1988-2002. He took over the Baylor program in 2004 and has been the head coach ever since.

Coach Gibson is married to Gena, and they have 3 children; Zane, Gavin, and Chandler.
