Red Raiders Beat McCallie 38-30 For Big Victory
Baylor's Sean Russell now knows what it feels like to win a state duals wrestling title as the coach of the Red Raiders.
Baylor made it two wins in a row over arch-rival McCallie, but the second one on Saturday afternoon in Franklin at the Williamson County Agricultural Exposition Center was by far the biggest as the Red Raiders jumped out to a 15-0 lead with wins in the opening three matches before prevailing by a 38-30 final.
"Our match with McCallie was awesome as our guys stayed focused and did exactly what they had to do to win," Russell said by phone later Saturday afternoon.
"We lost a couple of close ones early, but were able to bounce back. George Emendorfer had a huge win at 144 and Titus Norman had a big pin at 175. Dylan Reel had a big pin at 190 while Rock Shurette's pin at 285 sealed the deal.
"We lost a couple of close ones we didn't expect to lose, but it was another great team effort and it went about as we expected. But I'm really happy with the way we wrestled as we did well across the board," he added.
McCallie coach Jake Yost had nothing negative to say about his team, but was quick to congratulate the Red Raiders on another solid performance.
"Our guys did a great job, but Baylor did a great job too," Yost said after all was said and done.
"I was pleased with our effort, but we just came up a little bit short. We put out a different lineup from the last time we met and won some big matches, but Baylor did as well. We lost the toss and then the first three matches, which weren't a big surprise, but it's hard to get the momentum back after a start like that.
"It went back and forth and was a fun dual meet," Yost added.
Baylor had advanced to the championship match with a 56-16 win over Christian Brothers while McCallie whipped Father Ryan by a 67-5 to earn their spot in the finals.
Tristan Mouton posted a 15-5 major decision at 106 to get Baylor rolling while Riley Alcantar followed with a pin at 113 and Gabe Swann a technical fall at 120.
Axel Ritchie, Carson Brown and Jaxon Lane all picked up wins for McCallie to trim Baylor's lead to 15-12 before a tough 4-2 decision by George Emendorfer made it 18-12. Dylan Villers then used a first-minute pin at 150 to knot the score at 18-18 before a forfeit to Wyatt Boren at 157 gave McCallie its only lead at 24-18.
Baylor then used pins from Norman and Reel wrapped around a technical fall from Ollie Phillips at 175 that sealed the win to give Baylor a 35-24 lead with two matches remaining.
Cooper Gentle then got McCallie's second forfeit at 215 before Shurette's decision at 285 ended it.
These same two teams will meet again in the region meet at Baylor on Saturday with the winners advancing to the D-II traditional tournament on Feb. 13-14 at Montgomery Bell Academy in Nashville.
