MURFREESBORO, Tenn. -- The Chattanooga Christian Lady Chargers won their first-ever Division II-AA state softball title last spring and they appear to be well on their way toward winning a second.
It was another impressive performance for CCS senior southpaw Kylie Black as she won her 21st game of the season against just one loss in a complete game 11-2 victory over the Baylor Lady Red Raiders after tossing a three-hitter where she allowed two runs with eight strikeouts and no walks.
Baylor coach Kelli Smith knows that her team isn't finished, but this wasn't the way she wanted this year's state tournament to begin.
"That certainly wasn't the start to the game or the tournament that we wanted, but I was proud of how we bounced back in the bottom of the first. Let's give credit where credit is due. Chattanooga Christian has a bunch of good hitters and the Black girl is a really good pitcher," Smith complimented the Lady Chargers.
"Thank goodness this is a double-elimination tournament, but we need to clean up every aspect of our game as we'll definitely have to play better tomorrow," she added.
CCS jumped ahead at the start as Hannah Smith and Nyla Halfacre both walked before E.C. Chaffin singled to load the bases with one out. Knox then came through with the big blow, a three-run double on a 3-2 pitch.
Baylor answered in the bottom of the inning when Addison Wallington doubled with two outs and scored ahead of a two-run homer by Amiya Leach.
Baylor will now play Knoxville Catholic at 4:00 CST
