Lady Owls Repay Baylor For Girls Invitational Playoff Title
For the second time in 13 days, Ooltewah and Baylor were locked in a dead heat at the end of regulation play Monday at the 3rd annual Chattanooga Girls Invitational, once again at the Bear Trace Course at Harrison Bay.
"We just basically outlasted them today," remarked head coach Tony Williams after his Lady Owls claimed the crown on the third extra hole.
"In the City Prep we had a three-shot lead with two (holes) to play and Baylor made some big time shots down the stretch (before winning on the second playoff hole).
"Today we were down seven (shots) with four (holes) to play -- five with three to play and two with two to play," he related.
"All these girls from both teams are really good at golf so the margin of error is extremely small.
Both teams didn't have their best stuff today (shooting 5-over 149s in regulation) and scoring was really hard.
"I told my girls after they shot a combined 7-over on the front nine that golf is a windshield sport -- look forward not back and that we were still it.
'"Duck' and Alli (Troxell) had some big birdies down the stretch. Duck's on (No.) 18 was about a 12-footer," Coach Williams explained. "Then Alli made a 40-footer on the first playoff hole that turned out to be needed to keep the match going.
"Playoff holes in two straight tournaments will pay off for both of these schools in the postseason. I'm just proud of our kids."
The Troxell sisters both parred the 21st hole of play to secure the victory. Senior Charli ("Duck") fired a 2-over 74 in regulation, while sophomore Alli was right on her heels with a 3-over 75, the second and third lowest scores of the day.
Baylor was led by low-medalist Katie Grace Tuder firing an even-par round of 72, while teammate Charlee Spearman had the fourth-best round with a 5-over 77. Caroline Au carded an 81 for eight place individually, in support of the Lady Red Raider effort.
Bradley Central sophomore Avery Chastain, tied with Bella Pairs, from Chattanooga Christian and Signal Mountain's Maddy Odell for fifth place individually, with 80s.
Addison Ryland, of Soddy Daisy, and CCS's Shelby Fox rounded out the Top 10 with 82 and 84, respectively.
The Lady Chargers (164) held off the Bearettes (167) for third place in the team competition, as Bradley freshman Brynna Watts took 11th overall with an 87.
Ella Kelley posted a 92 as Signal Mountain took fifth place with 172.
Walker Valley captured sixth place in the 10-team field with freshmen Mia Gilliland and Camryn Moon shooting 89 and 92, respectively, while sophomore Callie Kessler added a 95, in support. Gilliland earned 14th place individually, while Moon tied for 16th place and Kessler 18th.
Cleveland senior Zoie Stinnett (98) and junior Reagan Weiss (101), who tied with Lady Eagle Olivia Moody, rounded out the Top 20 in the individual race
