Rabun Gap Uses Big 2nd Half To Knock Off Baylor, 35-24
Defending state champion Baylor scored on the first play from scrimmage and led at the half, 17-7. But Rabun Gap came roaring back and finished on top, 35-24, at Heywood Stadium.
On a night when one of the country's largest LED video displays in high school sports was dramatically unveiled, Baylor began with a glow and ended with a flicker.
Vanderbilt signee Whit Muschamp connected with Cam Sparks just out of the gate, and Baylor led by a touchdown just 20 seconds into the game.
Sparks had a second score to go along with a Baylor field goal to push the Red Raiders to their 10-point halftime advantage.
However, lefty quarterback Gavin Owens engineered a second half comeback that had the Eagles ahead 21-17 by the end of the third quarter.
Rabun Gap was pinned on their nine yard line by a Baylor punt, but Owens and talented end Trey Horne helped them again march down the field. The Eagles survived two third down plays and then went for it successfully on fourth down close in. On the scoring play, referees ruled that Horne had barely made it across the goal.
Muschamp managed one final scoring drive, but the Eagles had helped to seal the game by capturing a kickoff that first touched a Baylor player.
Baylor, which lost only twice last season, flies to Ireland early next week for a Friday night contest with Seton Hall Prep.
