Before you can win a state championship, you first have to earn your way to State.
Baylor Golf can officially check that box.
Both the Baylor boys and girls golf teams captured TSSAA Division II-AA East Region Championships on Monday, completing a Region sweep and securing spots in next week's State Tournament in Sevierville.
The Baylor boys put together a strong team performance, led by Mason Bankston's round of 70. Zack Bourgeois followed with a 71, while Adam Lauzon and Jack Morgan each carded 73s. Tate Sinfield-Day rounded out Baylor's lineup with a 76.
The Baylor girls were equally impressive.
Katie Grace Tuder led the way with a 69, the lowest Baylor round of the day. Caroline Au was right behind her with a 70, while Charlee Spearman added a 72 as the Red Raiders claimed the Region Championship and their place at State.
Monday's championships continued an impressive stretch for Baylor Golf. The Red Raiders entered postseason play with momentum after strong regular-season performances and rivalry victories, but the stakes changed with the arrival of the Region Tournament.
The objective was to advance.
Baylor did that and brought home two championship trophies in the process.
Now both teams will turn their attention to the final stage of the season and an opportunity to compete for state championships.
The first box has been checked.
Baylor Golf is State bound.
