Baylor's offense erupted for nine runs on eight hits, and Emerson Morris struck out nine as the Red Raiders came alive late to defeat Chattanooga Christian 9-2 on Tuesday.
The Red Raiders broke the game open with three runs in the fifth inning, then added three more
in each of the sixth and seventh to pull away from the Chargers.
Sam Godbout and Kilby Hartley paced Baylor offensively. Godbout went 2-for-3 with a double
and three RBI, while Hartley finished 2-for-2 with two RBI. Mac Morris added a 2-for-4
performance with an RBI double, and Zack Morrison scored twice and drove in a run. Jack
Schuman contributed an RBI despite going hitless, and Luke Wilkerson added a sacrifice fly.
Morris earned the win on the mound, allowing two runs — just one earned — on four hits while
striking out nine and walking two. Brady Brooks followed with 1.1 scoreless innings and three
strikeouts before Harrison Waag closed out the final two outs.
Chattanooga Christian managed six hits but was hampered by two errors and could not string
together consistent offense. Graham Stephenson led the Chargers, going 2-for-3 with an RBI,
while Blade Paty added a double and scored. Green, Wykoff, and Fessler each added a hit.
A pivotal moment came in the sixth inning when the Chargers appeared to threaten after Luke
Fessler reached first on an overthrow following a swinging strike in the dirt, bringing in two
would-be runs for the CCS.
An appeal by Baylor head coach Greg Elie resulted in Fessler being ruled out at the plate,
erasing the potential rally. The call prompted a heated exchange between the umpires and CCS
head coach Ben Wharton, who was issued a restriction in the following inning.
Will Fessler started on the mound for Chattanooga Christian, allowing four runs on four hits over
5.1 innings. Gabe Windley followed in relief, surrendering five runs on four hits in 1.2 innings,
and took the loss.
Baylor swiped six bases as a team, with Morrison stealing two. The Chargers were active on the
bases as well — Green stole three and Wykoff two — but could not convert the opportunities
into runs.
