KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – Baylor girls soccer closed out its regular season Thursday night with a hard-fought 1-1 draw against Webb School of Knoxville in a match that carried significant implications for the East Region standings.
With a region championship on the line, the Red Raiders entered the contest knowing a victory would secure the title. Although Baylor came up short of that goal, the team delivered a determined performance on the road.
Webb struck first in the 14th minute, finding the back of the net off a ball played inside the box to take a 1-0 advantage.
Baylor responded in the 35th minute when Ayanna Hamler connected on a pass from Harley Elam to even the score at 1-1 heading into halftime.
Both teams battled throughout the second half, with Baylor creating several quality scoring opportunities. However, neither side could find the winning goal, and the match ended in a 1-1 draw.
"We needed to win to win the region, but I was very pleased with our intensity and effort," said Baylor head coach Curtis Blair. "We created some great chances but just didn't finish them, and that happens."
Blair also praised the collective effort of his team, including the players supporting their teammates from the sideline.
"I was proud of our entire team today. The players that were on the bench deserve a ton of credit because they did a great job of encouraging and bringing a ton of energy for the players on the field. It was a true team effort today."
Baylor received strong performances from Grace King, Charlotte Hoss, goalkeeper Ella Metzner, Kinsley Faulkner and Reese Rowlett.
The draw brings Baylor's record to 11-3-2 overall and 6-1-1 in region play, closing out a competitive regular season as the Red Raiders turn their attention to postseason action.
Baylor will return home Tuesday to host Ensworth as the postseason begins.
