Baylor Soccer headed to Memphis this weekend looking for exactly what it found: high-level competition and an opportunity to grow.

The Red Raiders faced two of the state's top teams on back-to-back days, falling 3-0 to Houston on Friday before battling Collierville in a 4-2 loss Saturday.

Friday's match against Houston was delayed by lightning before the Mustangs struck three times in the opening half. Houston scored in the sixth minute off a corner kick, added another from 20 yards out one minute later and converted a breakaway in the 26th minute for a 3-0 halftime advantage. Both teams generated opportunities after the break, but neither found the net.

Baylor responded Saturday with a strong effort against Collierville.

After falling behind in the 10th minute, Reese Rowlett equalized in the 30th minute off an assist from Helena Lima. Seven minutes later, Ayanna Hamler was taken down in the box and Brylee Faulkner converted the penalty kick to give Baylor a 2-1 lead.

Collierville answered in the 39th minute, sending the teams to halftime tied 2-2.

A penalty kick in the 55th minute put Collierville back in front. Baylor pushed numbers forward looking for the equalizer before Collierville added a counterattack goal in the 78th minute for the 4-2 final.

"I thought this was a great weekend for us," Baylor coach Curtis Blair said. "Our goal was to continue to build relationships on and off the field and to play the best competition that we could find. Both teams are very good, and when you make a mistake, they punish you for it.

"I am really excited about this group because they played with intensity and effort all weekend. We can correct our mistakes and will be better by playing two teams like this as we get ready to finish out our region play."

Harley Elam, Abby Lewis, Adri Carey and Charlotte Hoss were among Baylor's standouts over the weekend.

The Red Raiders return from Memphis with a 7-2-1 overall record and remain unbeaten in region play at 2-0.
